SwiftKey, one of the most popular keyboard alternatives for Android, now has every chance of becoming even more popular. And that’s because its developers have decided to make it available for free in the Google Play Store.
SwiftKey is Now Free
The app used to cost $3.99 until now and it is switching to a “freemium” business model. Namely, you get the bestselling keyboard completely free, but a theme store has been added to it.
Said store will be selling you themes and packs for SwiftKey, if you want to customize it more.
In case you’ve bought SwiftKey already, you’re getting something too — a $4.99 Premium pack of 10 themes is yours to download, completely free of charge.
It’s interesting to see one of the most popular Android apps out there shift its business model. It will definitely bring it to the attention of more users, but will the company make more money by selling premium content? Only time will tell. But it’s safe to assume this was a planned move by the company after Apple revealed it’s it’s own predictive keyboard for iOS 8 at WWDC. It’s also worth noting that the company does license its technology to phone makers like Samsung, which also provides a steady income source.
SwiftKey is a popular keyboard with great technology. It’s predictions are sometimes so accurate it’s scary. So feel free to give it a try, if you haven’t already. It’s not like it will cost you anything.
What is your take on this decision? Do you use SwiftKey? Or if you don’t do you plan on giving it a try on your Android device now?
