The new Gmail Android app is a great way of only getting notified about mail that’s actually important to you. However, you can decide which labels get the right to show you notifications. The option is kind of buried in Settings, but it’s useful and something you might want to set up.
Click the menu button on the top right side of the Gmail Android app, then tap Settings.
Now, select the e-mail account you want to edit.
Tap Inbox Sound.
Now you can cycle through your labels and choose whether you want a notification for them or not.

Hi, I know this is an old post, but was wondering if there is a way to do the following on a gmail / android device:
Get a default ringtone for any email *except* one from a single specific label?
What I am trying to do is – a) not miss any emails and b)get *really* woken up when a very important message is delivered – by getting a different sound.
It appears that once you turn on (sound) notifications for the inbox – this is the only one that plays – even if you have other label notifications turned on?
You comments would be much appreciated.

In my case, it worked to just create a filter for certain messages (in the desktop version of Gmail), then assign messages filtered to a label. After that, you can edit the label and set the ringtone you want from the mobile app.
You might need to turn off notifications for the Primary label, as they might override each other. I guess it’s all down to good filtering. :)
